Case study

Atlas & Elm

Atlas & Elm is a private, one-person travel atelier that designs bespoke family journeys across the Mediterranean and beyond. The design was genuinely strong, but a heavy, inaccessible layer underneath was letting it down. Clickt rebuilt that layer so the experience finally matches the craft on the surface.

The challenge.

The site looked the part and the writing was excellent, yet the layer underneath quietly contradicted the brand's own promise that every detail has been thoughtfully handled. The homepage shipped close to 29MB of unoptimised imagery, so the hero took roughly four and a half seconds to paint on the phones families actually browse from. Every call-to-action button failed WCAG AA colour contrast, small labels sat just under the readable threshold, and headings, image alt text and page metadata had gaps that hurt both screen readers and search. None of this was a styling problem. The look was already right; the foundation had to be fixed before the look could be trusted.

What we did.

Clickt started with a full-site Lighthouse audit and then worked the findings in priority order. The eight heaviest destination images were converted to WebP and swapped in place, so the homepage and the journeys grid both got lighter from a single change. Button and label colours were moved onto a text-safe accent tone that clears AA contrast while keeping the same bronze look. Heading order was re-levelled, image links were given real names, and the missing page descriptions were added back. Throughout, the editorial palette and type system the brand already owned were kept and tightened rather than replaced, so the redesign reads as the same brand, only surer of itself.

Scope of work.

  • Full-site performance and accessibility audit
  • Homepage and journeys image optimisation (PNG to WebP)
  • WCAG AA contrast fixes across buttons and labels
  • Heading order, image alt text and metadata cleanup
  • Quiet editorial type and layout refresh
  • Monogram favicon and site icon
  • Copy pass to remove stray dashes site-wide

The results.

28.6MB -> 3.1MB homepage page weight
66 -> 89 homepage performance score
92 -> 100 accessibility score, sitewide
23/40 -> 27/40 design critique score

Performance, weight and accessibility figures are Lighthouse desktop runs (Lighthouse 13.4.0, host Chrome) taken before and after the fixes: homepage transfer weight 28,640KB to 3,107KB, homepage performance 66 to 89, largest contentful paint 4.5s to 1.7s, and accessibility rising from a 92 to 96 range up to 100 on all seven pages, with colour contrast passing sitewide. The design critique score (23/40 to 27/40) comes from the same critique method run against the same pages before and after. Per-image WebP file sizes were not recorded during the conversion, so only page-level weights are quoted.
